From Senshi with Love

The following passage was written by Eunice Grace Gatdula, who was an art intern for Senshi.Labs in late 2014, but continued to work with Senshi a couple of months after her internship. Eunice is Senshi’s very first intern and she also happens to be the vocalist of The Marty’s. Mathoria Team had her SoundCloud playlist on loop when they were working on their project, thereby turning her into their muse.

Well, I didn’t even know I was working on Adarna and Song of Pisces at first! It actually just started off as an activity: create monsters. And I just let it rip! When I started making things in the beginning, I didn’t even know what I was making it for. I mean, I knew it was a game, but I didn’t know any cheat codes or in-depth information about it. I didn’t even know the names of the main characters in the game. All I knew was, “Make this, and make it animate well.”

I don’t think I’ll ever forget seeing my sprites working as soon as they were placed in the engine. It felt like they were part of the world Senshi.Labs actually created especially for Adarna and Pisces. They fit in perfectly, and, in the most poetic sense, it felt like they found a home. My creations found a home in a different world, and this was unbelievable to me.

Then, I started getting jobs other than monster sprites. I won’t go much into the details, but I started illustrating things that were linked with the story line. Doc would actually have to tell me the story so I know what kinds of emotions and colors I needed. Suddenly, the world Senshi created made much more sense, and I could actually get equally as sad or as angry or as excited for the characters I was illustrating. Even though I was working for home, on my laptop, with or without a half-eaten slice of cake beside my graphics tablet, when I was working on Senshi.Labs projects, I was helping make something come alive, and I thought: I need to make this good.

Working for Senshi.Labs as part of my college internship program is an experience I will continue to cherish. “So this is what working on a project is like. I like it. I could do this everyday,” I always thought when I get my assignments. It’s very interesting watching all of these coders and designers work together to form a product you know is loved by everyone involved.

Both Adarna and Pisces received a lot of love. This I assure you. You can see it in the code, in the story, and in the design. Everyone’s love went into these games, and you’ll be sure to feel it when you play them as well.

Eunice is a graduating Multimedia Arts student of Asia Pacific College and currently the vocalist of The Marty's. She has green hair, sometimes. Otherwise, she's still very good at procrastinating and designing monsters. She's Senshi.Labs' first intern for a reason! You can listen to her SoundCloud at https://soundcloud.com/huhsmile.
